Bindings
Description: | The manuscript was rebound in 1991 by Nicholas Pickwoad in an alum tawed, white, pigskin binding on wooden boards. The previous binding was damaged, and the front plate lost altogether. The back plate of this binding, uncovered oak with some traces of red leather, still had two of the five original bosses at the outer corners, and is described as using' five double thongs, all anchored near the centre of the board, with angular channels for additional thongs at the head and foot' and is probably dated to the second half of the 13th c. Possibly, this was the binding in which the manuscript was originally bound. |

Date Information
Date(s): | ?1300 to 1400 |
Notes: | Based on the script. Northern textualis with double-compartment 'a', the upper compartment of which can be open or closed. Round 's' (8-like) or straight 's' in final position. The preference for round 's' in final position may suggest a date towards the middle or in the second half of the century. |

Condition: | Ralph Hannah and Thorlac Turville-Petre 2010, 95-98 describe the vellum as patchy, of surprisingly poor quality (and indeed there are many holes, even very large ones, in the writing space, e.g. f. 110; also stitches in the writing space, e.g. f. 177, stitches in the writing space, e.g. f. 252), badly finished and discoloured on hairsides. Subjected to a variety of repairs, fols. 25, 94 and 150 have been patched, a few lower margins are gone (e.g. f. 226 and 238, also f. 265 damage that only affects the text on f. 265, most of f. 251 has been torn out, and tears have been sewn, e.g. fols. 252, 259). Especially in the first 12 leaves a good deal of water damage, with upper edges restored. The text is affected only on fols. A-b and fol. ar, long exposed has been rubbed to nearly complete illegibility. Additionally, stains should be mentioned on e.g. f. 115, f. 307v, |
Date Information
Date(s): | ?1200 to 1250 |
Notes: | This date is suggested by the script and layout. Particularly the fact that the text has been copied above top line strongly suggests a date in the first half of the thirteenth century. |

Condition: | This part of the manuscript, especially the folios at the front of the manuscript are in a deplorable condition. Corners have been torn and the first folios a and b have been severely damaged by water. The vellum is of inferior quality, and does not match the rest of the manuscript which is one argument to consider these two quires as a different part, produced separately from the rest of the manuscript. |
Date Information
Date(s): | c. 1200 to 1300 |
Notes: | Based on the layout and script, one would assume a date in the first half of the thirteenth century. However, the contents - the fabliaux of Gautier le Leu - are usually dated to as late as 1267. If this section of the manuscript can be regarded as belonging to the core section, a dating in the third quarter of the thirteenth century would be justified and the layout and writing could be considered as archaic for the period. Otherwise, a revised dating of the oeuvre of le Leu would be in order, positioning him somewhere in the first half of the century, c. 1230. The evidence is inconclusive. On the one hand, in this section of the manuscript the decoration has not been completed, as opposed to the main section. On the other, hand and layout are strikingly similar, so a case can certainly be made for this part originally belonging to the manuscript and the layout either being intentionally archaic or the dating of the oeuvre of Gautier de Leu being too late. |

Scribe description: | The hand is no doubt contemporary to that of the core manuscript [MSPart 2]. Gaggero and Lunardi keep open the possibility that the scribe is the same as scribe 1 of the core sections. The writing is indeed strikingly similar. The use of 'i'-longa in final position and a very fine form of trailing 's' may be particular to this scribe, but otherwise the hand is very close to that which copied the final quires of the 'Aspremont' in the core manuscript. |
