Front end papers : | Two vellum flyleaves at the front. On the pasteboard: 'Inscrit J.P.G. Chatre de Cangé'. On the second flyleaf Cangé has added a title 'ROMAN / de / TROIE composé par / Beneois de Ste More (page 1 vo. l. 2) d'Apres Dares le Phrygien / et Dictys de Crete' and refers to previous ownership by Jacques II de Bourbon, comte de la Marche et de Castres and his marriage to Jeanne II, queen of Naples and Sicily in 1415. He died 24 September 1438. |
End papers : | No flyleaves at the back. De Cangé has added five folios (Part 2 of the manuscript), transcribed from BnF fr. 1610, which he thought were missing between f. 112 and f. 113. It is quite possible a quire has gone missing here. Although the catchword on f. 112v is correct, it is written in a lighter ink and later hand. |

Condition: | Medium quality vellum (few stitches, e.g. f. 91), in good condition. Some stains (e.g. f. 5) and tears (e.g. f. 9). The bottom corner of f. 23 has been repaired. Burn holes in f. 103 to 105. |
Date Information
Date(s): | ?1275 to 1330 |
Notes: | Mandragore has last quarter of the thirteenth century. The 'Imagining the Past in France'-catalogue (Morrison and Hedeman 2010, 57) dates the manuscript to c. 1330. The script, which sometimes has long 's' in final position and has double-bow 'a' would justify a date at the end of the 13th c. or the beginning of the 14th c. |
