Bindings
Description: | 15th-c. binding, whittawed leather heavily worn. Wood and fastening showing in the inside upper and lower boards. The pastedown in the upper board consists of three Latin fragments, materially different from one another: a Calendar for December (13th-c.?), a summary of the Offices in the Breviary for the feasts of St. Peter ad Vincula (14th c.? in the second col. there is a reference to York), and another Latin text (for all these, see Dossier: 2). Two bifolia are glued on the lower board, containing hyms and music on a four line stave (12th c.?, cf. Dossier, 2). Dossier, 3 says that "the book was found in an old hide trunk together with documents dating back to the xii cent., relating to the property of Ribston Hall, Wetherby, Yorkshire, by the owner, Mr J.E. Dent (Ribston had formerly belonged to the Knights Templars). [...] It was sold in 1944 by the finder's grandson, Mr G. Dent, through Mr Christie to Mr Eisemann [...] who offered it to the Library. It was at this point that the MS. was examined by Prof. Vinaver [cf. Vinaver 1949, 299-300; Vinaver 1967, III, 1279-82] [...] Purchased by the Library (without the Ribston documents) on 13 Feb. 1945." |
