Folios | 18 |
Folio notes: | After f. 18, the scribe of the 14th c. part of the manuscript has added an additional folio with the end of the Thebes section, The verso side of this folio has been left blank. Possibly the final page of the thirteenth-century manuscript was lost. Otherwise, it may have been part of a larger manuscript, also containing other sections of the 'Histoire ancienne'. The fourteenth-century folio was added in to provide the Thebes section with an appropriate ending, which could be followed by the Troie part of the narrative. In this view, the manuscript in its current state is the result of a fourteenth-century project aiming to provide a secular history of Orient, Thebes and Troy. |

General description: | f. 1-4ra: Section II (Orient I); f. 4ra to 19rb: Section III (Thebes). |
General illustration: | No illustration. Possibly, on f. 4ra, a blank space has been left for a single column drawing (height: 9 lines) at the beginning of the Thebes-section. Otherwise, too much room was left for the rubricated heading. |
General decoration: | The manuscript opens with a large pen-flourished initial 'D' (height: 6 lines) decorated with flourishings ending in small flowers. A similar, but smaller red initial (height: 3 lines) occurs at f. 4ra, at the opening of the Thebes-section. Smaller subdivisions of the text are marked by pen-decorated initials of two lines, alternating between blue and red, with flourishings in the contrasting colour. These flourishings also have the characteristic little flowers at the end. Generally, these initials are preceded with a heading in red ink. In the text, letters have been highlighted with a dash of rubric. Line-filling devices in red ink. |
Evidence of readership: | None. On the verso of the second flyleaf at the front 'aquis le 6e juin 1755'. |
