Watermark: | Good examples at f. 11-15-17. This watermark, letter 'P' with forked shaft and a four-leafed clover on top (height: 80 mm; width 16 mm; distance between chainlines 38 mm) resembles but is not identical to the numbers 112017 and 112029 in the Piccard database. These watermarks are dated to the 1460s and appear in paper used in Arnhem and Ensisheim. Similar motifs appear to have been very popular in Germany in the 1480s. |
Condition: | The first quire (originally consisting of twelve folios) is made up of vellum. The rest of the manuscript consists of paper. Many of the folios have been severely damaged and repaired to various degrees of success. Not taking into account the portion of text lost at the end of the manuscript, approximately thirty folios have been lost. Six folios before the beginning, some eleven folios in the first four quires and almost the entire quire 'G' (f. IIII(XX)IIII to IIII(XX)XIIII). |
Collation: | |
Quire structure: | Difficult to establish. The first quire appears to have consisted of twelve folios. Going on the quire marks (marked A to R), many of the other quires seem to have consisted of the same number of folios (no folios lost). 1-12 (A) 13-24 B 25-36 (C) 37-48 (D) 49-60 E 61-82(72) F 83- 93 (G) 94- 105 H 106-117 I 119-130 K 131- 142 L 143-153 (skipped 150) M 154-164 N 165-177 (skipped 169?) No. of illustrations: | 1 |
General illustration: | The manuscript opens with a frontispiece consisting of a rubricated titulus (largely erased) beginning with a blue foliate initial on a field of goldleaf (height: 2 lines). The actual text begins with a similar initial (height: 3 lines). In the bas-de-page, a scene depicts how Eve is tempted by the snake, crawled up in the Tree of Knowledge. Adam watches the scene fearfully from the right. The page is decorated with a full border, made up of blue and pink acanthus leaves, cornflowers and roses or poppies. |
General decoration: | The remainder of the manuscript is much more simple. Paragraphs open with a plain initial (height: 1 lines). In the first quire made up of vellum, these initials are blue. In the following paper quires they are red. Most paragraphs are introduced by a rubricated titulus. However, in some cases space has been left for tituli (e.g. f. 4, f. 5) which have not been completed. Litterae notabilores have been highlighted in the text with yellow ink. |
Evidence of readership: | Scribbles or annotations appear on almost every page of the manuscript, going from alphabets (e.g. f. 144r), calculations (e.g. f. 3, f. 65r, f. 68v, f. 16r, f. 39v, f. 74r), copies of tituli (e.g. f. 77r, f. 79r, f. 81r, f. 117r), added tituli (f. 67r), to crude drawings (e.g. f. 79v, f. 105v, f. 106r, f. 111v, f. 166r, f. 167r, f. 168r). Some interesting annotations may be found on the following folios: f. 9r: 'Ce liure apartient a maistre ?de Sallez? Foliations description: | The oldest (contemporary) foliation is noted in roman numerals in the upper margin of the recto (sometimes also verso), centered or in the outer corner. This foliation runs from f. VII to f. II(C) IX. This foliation shows that many folios have been lost (e.g. f. VIII, f. IX, XIII, XIV, XV, XVIII, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, XXVII, XLIII, IIII(XX)IIII to IIII(XX)XIII). The foliation jumps from LXIX to IIII(XX). Other, modern foliations in the lower outer corner of the recto (1-166), and three foliations in the upper outer corner of the recto one of which runs to 124. The correct one, however, is noted in red ink and runs to 168. |
