Description: | Modern brown leather binding with the arms of the Duke of Roxburghe impressed in gold in the center of the upper and the lower board. Title on the spine: Roman de Melyadus. The pastedowns of the upper and lower board and the first and the last flyleaf consist in thin cardboard. On the pastedown of the upperboard there is sticker of Irene and Peter Ludwig. On f. Iv, a modern hand noted the numbers of old shelfmarks (and/or catalogues): 1. on the top left: 6097; 2. on the top in the center: D 20 - 1008; 3. in the center: from the Duke of Roxburghe Library, 1527 Lang, 3632 mss Phillips 1828. On the bottom right corner of f. 291r a modern hand noted the collation of the volume: a-z10, A-E10, F10-2 = 288 leaves coll. compl. HPK BSSK xii/66 and below 9502. On f. IIr, a long note in pencil by George Henry Freeling (see below, 'History'), about textual and content analogies and differencies with another manuscript (BL Add. 12228: both manuscripts were part of the Roxburghe collection, and the comparison leaves no doubt): "This ms corresponds precisely in the matter with the other ms. [etc.]" and the printed edition of the Melyadus de Leonnoys. The same hand numbered in arab numerals the chapters and continued the comparison between the two copies and the printed edition all along the text: f. 60v under the a column; f. 68r under the writing space; f. 73v on the side of the a column etc. |
