LanguageLanguage object (58)
Approx. date?1275 to 1300
Date notes Last quarter of the 13th c.: Avril-Gousset 1984, 19; Cigni 1999; Lagomarsini 2014, 76-77.
Place(s) of production
Northern Italy or Tuscany. Avril - Gousset 1984, 19 (on the basis of the illustration). Parodi and later Limentani showed that the language of the "volgarizzamento" of the Roman de Guiron points towards Pisa and Lucca (Limentani 1962, CV-CVI). However, Cigni and Lagomarsini noticed for other sections of the MS (e.g. ff. 250r-268v), the presence of Northern Italian linguistic traits, cf. Cigni 1999, pp. 50-51 n. 50 and Lagomarsini 2014, 76-77.

Material

Material:Material object (4)
Watermark:
Condition:The first folio survives only in two fragments from the bottom left corner and the bottom right corner of it. The decoration indicated that this folio was probably the frontispiece of the MS (cf. Cigni 1999, p 34 n. 7). Other folios are damaged, especially those of the first quire. Condition otherwise good.

Structure

Collation:
Quire structure:70 quires, with many lacunae, structure based on quaternions and ternions. At least a quire is lost between the 5th and the 6th quire (f. 38v presents a catchword that does not correspond to the beginning of f. 39ra). For more details, see the table in Cigni 1999, 67-9.

Physical description

No. of illustrations:52
General illustration:One same illustration programme, probably by a single artist. Two illuminations at ff. 107v (Tristan and Palamedés) and f. 320v (Iseut's journey to Cornwall?) and 50 historiated initials, listed in Avril-Gousset 1984, 19-20: "peinture gouachée à dominante bleu [...] style d'inspiration bononaise" (p. 20). Cigni recognises a "stile di ispirazione bolognese, presente in mss. di tipo soprattutto liturgico [...] ma anche giuridico e filosofico, della seconda metà del sec. XIII" Cigni 1999, 63.
General decoration:Small initials alternating red and blue. The decorator didn't accomplish his task, thus in many quires the small initials have not been painted. There are pen flourishes at ff. 11r-16r, 23r-25r etc. "d'execution assez négligée [...] comparables des manuscrits venitiens fr. 854 et 12473 [= song books I and K, on which see Zinelli 2007]" sometimes scraped off and replaced by painted initials, e.g. at f. 10r (cf. Avril-Gousset 1984, 20). At f. 46v-47, small initials are painted in black. For more details, see Cigni 1999, p. 35 n. 8 and 63-64.
Evidence of readership:At f. 100va, three proverbs copied in column, cf. Cigni 1999, p. 42 n. 28.
