Physical description

General illustration:The c. 200 illustrations correspond to either one column (but usually larger than a column) or to the writing space (but usually larger than the writing space), and can be either inside the writing space or exceed the writing space. Illustrations are framed, but trees, buildings or other natural elements or constructions are often prolonged beyond the writing space and occupy either the margins or the intercolumn. There is usually no 'continuity' of the natural landscape (sky, meadows, mountains, forests etc.); the background is filled by elegant geometric motives. Figures are lively, and the use of 'chiaroscuro' magisterial; names, written in red ink, are clearly part of the iconographic program. For a more detailed description, and considerations about the contents, see Jung 1996, 178-80; and Busby 2002, 608-11.
General decoration:A noteworthy characteristic of the MS consists in the general autonomy of the segmentation of the text operated by the litterae notabiliores from that provided by the iconographic program. 'Puisque la segmentation du texte par les grandes initiales ne coïncide pas avec l'emplacement des miniatures, les manuscrits proposent au fond deux lectures qui ne se recoupent pas [...] Le cycle iconographique a été conçu à part.' (Jung 1996, 178). Apart from the frontispice (cf. supra, the paratextual features of segment 1), the mise en texte is based on a two-level decorative schema: 1) framed decorated letters (height: 2 to 6 lines), in bright colours (blue, red, rose, with white touches) and with the typical development of phytomorphic motives from the top and bottom left corner of the frame, which expands in the margin or in the intecolumn and is often accopanied by gilded circles; 2) decorated initials (height: 2-3 lines) alternating red and blue with thick blue and red pen-flourishes.
