Bindings
Description: | 15th-c. English binding of brown leather over bevelled wood, sewn on six cords, apparently pegged two to a hole. The spine is completely broken through, and the whole structure currently supported by a cloth chemise. In the upper board, two intact straps with metal reinforced holes to go over pins. Pastedowns from a noted breviary, first half of the 13th c. (cf. Hannah and Turville-Petre 2010, 99-100). The binding is in bad repair and so are a number of folios which have been badly sewn or damaged, which has caused the manuscript to become too fragile to handle. |
