Condition:Poor quality vellum with holes and stitches in the written space (e.g. ff. 8, 16, 18, 21, 28, 34, 37, etc.). Folio 1 severely damaged. Parchment has been pillaged from the lower margins of ff. 1, 5, 7, 71. In numerous instances, the ink has faded or been entirely erased (e.g. f. 7r, 67r) Stains (e.g. ff. 2r, 7v, 59v).

Physical description

General illustration:Italian-style pen-drawn miniatures spanning the width of the page, placed either in the middle of the justification or in the bas-de-page on ff. 4v, 6v, 10v, 14r., 17r, 20r, 24r, 27v, 29r, 35r, 41r, 43r, 46r, 50v, 52r, 57r, 61r, 64r, 68v, 72r, 74v, 78r). Partially coloured with bright reds, dark and pale blue, grey, pink, green and gold. The characters are not identified with captions in red ink, as is the case in other Genoa-Pisan MSS.
General decoration:Foliate initials (ff. 26ra, 40va, 70va; height: 10 lines) at major divisions of the text marked by 'Or dit li contes'. Pink initials are painted against green and blue or red grounds, decorated with floral patterns. Plain initials, (height: 2-3 lines), alternatingly red and blue, partially painted in the margins.
Evidence of readership:On f. 2r, old shelfmarks '495' and '6974'. Doodles in the lower margin of ff 6v, 43r (dog), 45 (male head), 54v (man pointing, intended as manicula?), 74v (horse-in-the-making), 75r (horse).
Foliations description:Modern foliation in arabic numerals in the upper right corner of the recto.

Scribe description:Rounded Southern textualis, with two-compartment 'a', the upper lobe of which is open, uncial 'd' with short, near-horizontal ascender, 'e' with tongue in final position, 8-like 'g' with angular lower lobe, no diacritic on 'i', 'q' with exceptionally short descender, round and straight 's' in final position, 3-like 'z'. Relatively few abbreviations which include uncrossed tironian 'et', apostrophe, very short nasal bar. Fusion of 'de', 'ci', 'co', 'ce'.'st' ligature. Punctus,
