Condition: | This appears to have been a large format, luxuriously executed manuscript, written on good quality vellum. Although the decoration (pen-flourished initials) may not be of the highest standard (compare the contemporary manuscript BnF fr. 95 and its accompanying volume in Yale), the broad margins suggest a valuable copy. The condition is not the same for all three fragments. The upper margin of all three has been trimmed, as has at least one of the side margins, resulting in text loss in the upper margin for f. 2 (IV 621.14) and loss of text in the outer margin of f. 3 (IV 621.15). In general, f. 1 is in the best condition, although with some staining. Folio 2, on the other hand is in the worst condition; the verso side of the folio is heavily worn, and the folio is damaged in the outer margin . |
Date Information
Date(s): | c. 1300 |
Notes: | Dating based on the script and illustration. Also see: Van Hoecke 1987, 256. Three distinct hands, the third of which, according to Van Hoecke, is slightly later than the first two. Mise en page, decoration and provenance (the leaves were used as covers for the accounts of the Benedictine monks of Gembloux for the years 1597, 1589-1590 and 1591) suggest that these leaves originally belonged to the same manuscript, and also to the same campaign in the production process. |
