[Part 1]

General information

Folios354
Folio notes:The verso side of f. 354 has been left blank. The observations of P. Saenger (1989, 37) may suggest that this MS consists of two MS Parts, one dated to c. 1300 (ff. 49-127), the other (ff. 1-48; 128-354) slightly earlier.

Physical description

No. of illustrations:3
General illustration:Three illustrations in the style of Paris (height: 11 lines). The image on f. 1r has been severely damaged. It shows king Ban and Bohort, together with their wives. The images on f. 200 and 292 portray Galahad and a companion on horseback and Meleagant's sister in a boat, approaching Lancelot, watching from a tower (Saenger 1989, 37).
General decoration:Pen-flourished initials throughout. Those on ff. 49-127 frequently have penned representations of human faces and foliage (Saenger 1989, 37).
Evidence of readership:On f. 1r. 'A mademoiselle Anne de Graville de la succession de feu monseigneur l'amiral Vc XVIII'. In an early modern hand 'Chronique de Bretagne'. In a modern hand '27'. On f. 354, an ex-libris, probably medieval, erased.

Scribe description:Written by two scribes. Saenger 1989, 37 notes that the first hand occurs in ff. 1-48, 128-354, which he characterizes as an early gothic textualis media. The second hand has copied ff. 49-127, and according to Saenger is later and more angular. This strengthens the impression that this second part was added at a later date.
