| General illustration: | The text opens with a three-quarter page miniature representing the Fall of man. In the center of the miniature Adam stands before God surrounded by animals. Some of the species (the short-legged goat-with-antlers and dog-headed ostridge) have not survived the Deluge. Two rivers lead towards a fountain. To the right, the snake tempts Eve to bite the apple. Full page frame in scarlet, with scroll in gold, with painted in blue the motto ‘plvs iove que dveil’. Centered in the lower margin is a coat of arms. A tower d’or on three white hills on a field of blue, with a red frame and a helmet on top. The miniature is followed by an initial (height: 5 lines), blue on a field of scarlet decorated with gold flourishings (flowers and acanthus leaves). The text is further illustrated by single column miniatures in narrow frames of gold and scarlet (height: 17 lines) f. 24v: Abraham sacrifices Isaac; f. 33v; f. 55v: battle between Tideus and Polyneices; f. 72v: abduction of Helen; 77r: Achilles kills Hector; 80v: death of Achilles; 82r: Pirrus kills the Queen; 84r: Pirrus decapitates Polixena; 90r: suicide of Dido; 99v: battle between Eneas and Turnus; 119v, murder of Cyrus, 134r, Alexander and Bucephalus, 150r, murder of Olympias; 156r: Amilcar hanged; 157v: death of Hannibal the Elder; 168r: Hasdrubal’s head presented to his brother; 176v: Hasdrubal’s wife throws herself into the fire. 189r: women cut their throats, one hangs herself with her two children; 194r: Gaius Marius has himself beheaded; 201v: siege of a city and another beheading; 203r: victorious entry of Pompeius in Rome. |
