Condition:Medium to lower quality vellum, with holes, also in the written space, e.g. ff. 28. The MS makes a worn impression, with holes (f. 1), damaged edges (e.g ff. 2-5, 13, 22, 26, upper corner torn) and stains (ff. 39, 40). The lower border of f. 82 has been cut. Lower and outer border of f. 88 cut.

Quire structure:Originally, the MS was made up of quaternions and quinions. In a number of instances, folios have been lost at the beginning of the quire (e.g. after f. 17, 25, 41, 46, 71). Other folios lost after ff. 44, 47.

Physical description

General illustration:Historiated initial (height: 10 lines) on f. 2ra, blue against ochre and blue ground, gilt frame. With partial, multi-colour border supporting dragons, a hare and a crane or stork. Preceded by titulus in red ink. On f. 1v, full-page miniature in two registers. The images each portray a knight (in the upper register: Lancelot) accompanying a damsel (in both registers: Guenevere), both are mounted. The miniatures are pen-drawn and in part also coloured with bright red, grey and blue. Other miniatures spanning the width of the page, occasionally placed mid-page, but mostly in the bas-de-page on ff. 2v, 3v, 5r, 6v, 10r, 12v, 14v, 20r, 21v, 23r, 27r, 27v, 29r, 31r, 34r, 36v, 38r, 42r, 43r, 48r, 50r, 51r, 52v, 58r, 59v, 63v, 64v, 66r, 68v, 72r, 75v, 77r, 83r, 84v, 86r, 89r, 91r, 92v, Pastel colours, pink, purple and blue, bright red, orange and green. Characters identified by captions in red ink.
General decoration:Decorated initials (height: 5-6 lines, ff. 13r, 52r, 71r, 74r, 85v, 88v), yellow, against blue and red fields. Plain initials (height: 2-3 lines), alternatingly blue and red, at paragraphs.
Evidence of readership:On f. 1v, annotation in cursive hand and drawing of three coats of arms. Arthurian fiction tentatively suggests 'Genoilhac and Gouffer'. On f. 2r, old shelfmarks '156', 'St-Germain 216', 'N. 178' and printed vignette 'Ex Bibliotheca MSS COISLINIANA, olim SEGUERIANA'. On f. 56r, in the upper margin, contemporary note in Latin 'd(om)ina g??..??s nos'. Scribble in the lower margin of f. 94v.

Scribe description:Rounded Southern hand with double-compartment 'a', the upper compartment of which is open, 'e' with tongue in final position, 8-like 'g', 'h' with rounded limb, ending on the baseline, 'i' with diacritic, not limited to sequence of minims, round 's' in final position, trailing 's' at the end of the line, 3-like 'z'. Abbreviations include apostrophe, short nasal bar, uncrossed tironian 'et'. Fusion of 'o' and round 'r', 'b' and round 'r', 'd' and round 'r', 'co', 'po'. 'st' ligature. Word-separation marked by dash. Punctus.
