Physical description

General description:This is the first volume of a two-volume set. Paris, BnF fr. 40 has the 'Faits des Romains'.
No. of illustrations:20
General illustration:The text opens with a frontispiece which consists of a painting of Adam and Eve being exiled from Eden by the Archangel Michael, occupying half the page. Heraldry associated with Louis de Bruges, that is, coats of arms in the borders and his motto, has been overpainted with the coat of arms of France and the emblem of the Order of the Porcupine associated with Louis XII and the castle of Blois. Further illustrations include 19 single-column miniatures (height: c. 15 lines). The heraldry in the margins associated with these images (e.g. f. 41r) has also been overpainted with the coat of arms of France. On ff. 66v and 124r, however, we find the monograms of Louis of Bruges and his wife Margaret of Borselen. The borders on ff. 91v, 129v, and 163v feature Louis of Bruges' emblem, the cannon, and on ff. 144v and 263v we read his motto 'Plus est en vous'. According to Luxury Bound, the illustration was executed by Loyset Liédet and artists influenced by the Master of the Getty Froissart, the Master of the White Inscriptions, and the Master of Edward IV.
General decoration:The miniatures are preceded by a rubricated heading and followed by floreate initials (height: 4 lines), in blue, scarlet, and gold leaf. The borders accompanying these paintings are decorated with acanthus, quatrefeuilles in blue and pink, thistles, gold, and gold balls. Paragraphs are introduced by rubricated headings which are followed by champ initials (height: 2 lines). Litterae notabiliores in the text are highlighted with yellow ink.
Evidence of readership:Old shelfmarks f. 15r: '2', '6730', 'deux cens dixhuit'.
Foliations description:Contemporary foliation in roman numerals, written in red ink, in the top right corner of the recto.
