Physical description
General illustration: | |
General decoration: | Space was left for the opening initial on f. 1r (height: 20 lines), which is followed by flourished display letters that alternate red and blue. Chapters begin with illuminated initials incorporating geometric patterns (height: 7 to 14 lines), and partial borders. Paragraphs are marked with plain initials (height: 3 lines), alternating red and blue. These are flourished on f. 1r, but thereafter left unadorned. Smaller flourished initials (height: 2 lines) begin couplets and stanzas of verse passages, e.g. f. 10v. The decoration often incorporates shields (argent, 3 bends gules, and a chief azure). On the basis that these sometimes appear on a ground of fleurs-de-lys and that stars of David occasionally form part of the decoration, Blanchard suggests the volume was dedicated to the Carafa family of Naples. But see Cigni 2012, 273-4. |
