Condition:Very good parchment, with a few small holes and sewn tears restricted to the margins (e.g. ff. 3, 36, etc.). Folio 1r is particularly worn, but the text remains legible. Though the margins remain capacious, the volume has evidently been trimmed considerably.

Physical description

General illustration:
General decoration:The volume opens with a large puzzle initial in red and blue (height: 12 lines) on f. 1ra, in the space probably intended for a miniature (another initial 'A', 4 lines in height, immediately follows). Chapters are marked by puzzle initials (height: 6 to 11 lines, typically 9), with particularly tight penwork, accompanied by partial bar borders in red and blue. Paragraphs are marked by pen-flourished initials (height: 2 lines), alternating red and blue (with decoration in the opposing colour). The stanzas of lais begin with pen-flourished initials (height: 2 lines) or plain initials (height: 1 line), alternating red and blue. Guide letters are visible beneath the decoration.
Evidence of readership:Signed in the lower margin of f. 1r by Alexandre Petau (dated 1645). He has also supplied a title in the upper margin. The lower margin of f. 2v is signed by Nicolas de Nicolay. The beginning of the final (defective) chapter on f. 393rb has been crossed out in brown ink. Supplied titles on f. 394v in 15th-c. (?) cursive: 'Cest li liure de lystoire du saint greal / et de tristan'; and 'Cest le co(m)ma(n)ceme(n)t de / la nativite de tristan'.
Foliations description:Roman numerals in red ink in the upper right of recto sides, running 'j' to 'cccxciij', contemporaneous to the production of the manuscript. Folio 394 was numbered 'CCCXCIIII' in pencil by a later hand.
