Structure

Collation:

11 23-138 145 155

Quire structure:Folio 1 (with the start of laisse I, 47) probably is part of the same bifolium as the remnant of the first folio of the manuscript, which has not been foliated. The inner folios of this quire have been lost. The majority of the quires in the manuscript are quaternions. The second quire (f. 2 to f. 8) is a ternion. It does not seem that folios have been lost in this quire. Quire 14 (f. 98 to 102) is an irregular quire of five folios. This structure allows the 'Mort Alixandre' to begin in a new quire. There also appears to be a change of scribe here. The final quire is also irregular, but given the bifolium marks on folios 103 to 106, two folios have been lost at the end of this quire. The manuscript ends in the middle of laisse 4.44.

Physical description

General illustration:none
General decoration:The manuscript started with a puzzle-initial (height: 6 lines) on a field of blue penwork. A large initial (height: 4 lines) in red with minimal decoration (red fretwork in the eye) in the same colour occurs on f. 48v ('Ce fu el mois demai .i. poi deua(n)t lissue'). Another large initial (height: 6 lines) without decoration on f. 103 (A lessue de mai tout droit en ce termine) marks the beginning of the 'Mort Alixandre'. A new quire starts here. Part of the a-column and the b-column of the verso of the final folio of the previous quire, which is irregular, has been left blank. Each laisse starts with a plain initial in red ink (height: 2 lines). Guide letters in the margin.

Foliations description:Modern foliation in arabic numerals in the upper right corner of the recto (starts 1, the remnant of the first page which has been torn is not foliated). Faded foliation in Roman numerals, also in the upper right corner of the recto (starts at VIII, suggesting that seven folios were lost). The quire marks on each folio in the lower corner (start aviii) confirm this suggestion. Additional foliation in Roman numerals in the outer margin of the verso. This foliation concurs with the medieval foliation on the recto.
