Condition:Fair quality to lower-grade parchment with relatively many holes (f. 24, f. 57, f. 91, f. 94, f. 105, f. 118. f. 142, f. 145, f. 165, f. 175, f. 176, f. 183, f. 211), some of which in the writing space and stitches (f. 30, f. 194, f. 222, f. 241, f. 254). The first lines of f. 1r have faded. Folds in the first quires. Folios 104 to 106, 143 to 146 and 153-154 have been damaged in the outer margin (torn, ratty?). Folio 179 has been torn, the first lines of the recto and verso remain. One additional folio has been torn between f. 269 and f. 270.

Quire structure:The first quire is a binion. The following quires are all quaternions, except for quire 14 which is a sexternion and quire 35, which is defective (one folio is missing between folios 270 and 271). The final quires of the manuscript were probably lost or damaged and were replaced in the fourteenth century. The addition also includes the 'Vengeance' of Guy de Cambrai.

General decoration:The manuscript opens with a puzzle-initial (height: 5 lines). Additional major subdivisions by means of puzzle-initials (height: 8 lines) on f. 57r ('Fuerre de Gadres'), f. 92r, f. 111r. f. 119r, f. 159v, f. 192v, f. 213v and f. 244v ('Mort Alexandre'). The pen-flourished initials on f. 1v and f. 2r have been decorated with J-borders in blue and red. In general 'laisses' are indicated by plain initials (height: 2lines), alternatingly red and blue. Particular mask decorations by the scribe f. 6v, f. 49v.

Scribe description:Northern textualis rotundus with double-compartment a the upper lobe of which is open. Tongued 'e', especially marked at the end of the line. Both straight and 'round 's' in final position. Use of 'v' in initial position. Abbreviations include: apostrophe, also used for q(ue), com- and -us abbreviation, 'p' with crossed descender, superscript vowels, crossed tironian note.
